Yet another bit of Business Wisdom: Dead Horse Syndrome<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/header>\n

The tribal wisdom of the Dakota Indians, passed on from one generation to the next, says that when you discover that you are riding a dead horse, the best strategy is to dismount. But in modern business (and education and government) heavy investment or other considerations may encourage other strategies:<\/p>\n

– Bying a stronger whip.<\/p>\n

– Changing riders.<\/p>\n

– Threatening the horse with termination.<\/p>\n

– Appointing a committee to study the horse.<\/p>\n

– Visiting other sites to see how they ride dead horses.<\/p>\n

– Lowering the standards to include dead hourses.<\/p>\n

– Reclassifying the dead horse as \u201cliving-impaired\u201d.<\/p>\n

– Hiring outside contractors to ride the dead horse.<\/p>\n

– Harnessing several dead horses together to increase speed.<\/p>\n

– Providing additional funding and\/or training to increase the dead horse\u2019s performance.<\/p>\n

– Doing a productivity study to see if lighter riders would improve the dead horse\u2019s performance.<\/p>\n

– Declaring that the dead horse requires less overhead and therefore contributes more to the bottom line.<\/p>\n

– Rewriting the expected performance requirements for all horses.<\/p>\n

– Promoting the dead horse to management.<\/p>\n
